1835 was the year of the Great Fire--which destroyed much of the city. This article should give you the facts you need for your assignment: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Fire_... It was also the year that the New York Sun newspaper printed the great Moon hoax, where the paper reported that scientists had discovered creatures living on the Moon. My footnote is I lived through it - so believe it. 1. The draft ended and the all volunteer force came into effect. This is a big deal and I would use it as a biggie. (about 1972 or so) 2. President Ford tried to ask Congress to help South Vietnam when the North violated all peace treaties. The Democrat congress refused President Ford's request, and South Vietnam fell to communism. (Mar-April 1975) These are two big events that have shaped America even to this day. Democrats want to do the same thing to Iraq that they did to Vietnam. Even at war, the military is still all voluntary.
