Question: I attend Southeastern Louisiana University. GPA 3.210. I only participate in one charitable event. And presently a senior. Is it too late to do it as an undergrad.

I would definitely start attending events now and get to know members. Like the last poster said, it is not too late. Some chapters do still choose seniors, but others may not since you will not be around long to do anything with the chapter. Yet, it can't hurt to go to the interest meetings and find out more about the organization. Then when its time to apply, the worst they can tell you is no. Make sure though that along with that GPA you have a lot of community service hours and know a FINANCIAL Delta to be able to write you a letter of recommendation. These 2 things are also required for membership. One last note, if you do no make it in at the undergrad level, Delta Sigma Theta accepts membership on the Alumnae level (i.e. after you have achieved your Bachelor's degree.) While yes, most people want the college expereince so prefer going through undergrad, it is not the end of the road once you graduate. The main downfalls to the graduate level membership are the price may be higher and graduate chapters may go 5+ years without accepting new members. I suggest you look into this if you are getting ready to graduate. It may be good to start going to events of local graduate chapter to get to know members just in case things don't work out in undergrad.

Hi there, At this point I would just focus on your grades, get involved on campus with other organizations, and if you haven't get involved in community service. You stated that you were involved in Delta Gems so do you know any of my sorors personally? I would reach out to them. Do they know your interests of becoming a Delta? Also attend as MANY of my sorors events that you can. By doing this alone this will let them know that you are interested in membership. When we choose prospective members, we are looking for those that stand out. This can be accomplished by having a high solid gpa, impeccable community service, and a person who is involved on campus. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I'd just elaborate on what you wrote. To be honest, you can turn that paragraph alone into 1-2 pg paper on why you want to join. Talk about why you want to make a difference in the world and what not. If you love to volunteer, I'd give some example of when you have done some volunteer work, and don't forget to mention the elation of a job well done. Good Luck!!

It's not to late if they have a line before you graduate. However, if you do not have verifiable community service, you will not qualify. Your community service must be ongoing and not a one time event. Please visit our National website for the requirements. www.deltasigmatheta.org.

I would continue doing community service, and if possible I would focus on completing community service outside of church. Seems like you are on the right track, and when we look over applicants packets, we want to pick out the cream of the crop. In my personal opinion that constitutes as a person that not only has a lot of community service, but in many different areas and different organizations as well. Congrats for giving back to your church, but YES we need to see community service outside of church. If you can get involved outside the church that would be great (like big brothers big sisters, or habitat for humanity just to name a few) Good luck to you quest in becoming a Delta.

your community service should show a commitment to the greater community in which you go outside of you comfort zone. if the service is somehow connected to your work or is confined to your church then those activities aren't considered community service. the duration of your service should be measureable in terms of years. in that sense, it is more difficult to qualify for graduate chapters. Delta is a christian public service and social organization.
