As a college graduate who has completed requisite coursework, you can always apply to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniformed_Services_University_of_the_Health_Sciences USAF Physicians (MD/DO), Dentists (DDS/DMD), Veterinarians, Medical Scientists (PhD), and Psychologists (like me...PhD or PsyD.) go to Sheppard AFB for a few weeks of training...where you are told about things military...like not farting out loud in the O Club. There is little to no harassment...as you are commissioned an O-3 (O-4 for board certified specialists in most disciplines) prior to attendance I don't know if the school is still at Sheppard, but there will be a similar program in the USAF, USA, and USN. It is possible to have the military pay for your medical education, but bear in mind that you will owe them two years service for each year of training. Good luck.

This isn't a new poem, I have read it before and remember the first stanza particularly, as the word choice is exquisite.

Isabel Originally Answered: In your opinion what is the purpose of nursing as part of the health professions team?
Nurses provide the link between the Doctor and the patient. They are the ones who insure that the medicine in the hospital setting is delivered, and charts are up to date. While yes it is true that they do assist the doctors with care, they also are the human and down to earth side of the medical world- making it understandable for patients. In some situations they can provide comfort and care- but they do more than just shadow a doctor. Hope this helps.

Nurses only assist physicians during procedures when both are present. RNs are independent practitioners as part of the health care team. They are the patient care manager and advocate in ensuring proper care for the patient throughout the health care milieu. While physicians will write medical orders and presciptions, it is the duty of the RN to evaluate the orders, and to clarify or refuse orders which are contrary to the patients best needs. Along those lines physicians write prescriptions which are sent to pharmacies, but pharmacist evaluate and fill the order if appropriate, they do not assist the physician. Physical Therapist receive orders from physicians which they accept or clarify or deny and provide physical medical care. They again do not assist the physician. When a patient is admitted to a hospital, it is because it has been determined that they require nursing care (not medical care). Nursing care is provided to patients 24 hours per day. Nurses evaluate the patient in relation to his condition and environment, and then make nursing diagnoses, write nursing orders, implement those orders using the nursing care assets (LPNs and CNAs) and the reassess the effect of the nursing care. When the patients need other services available in the facilities, RNs facilitate their transportation, often monitor them during transportation, and their return. Nurses provide education and plan for the patient discharge, and assist in the patient's transition from the hospital. The items you mentioned are tasks the RN performs as part of the nursing care process. Hope this helps!

nurses have to advocate for the patient. they are the ones that spend most of the time with the patient and are the buffer between them and the doctor. they provide the day to day cares and are a support system for the patient.
