Testing auction mechanisms experimentally in a controlled environment provides an inexpensive means for evaluating their relative merits. The first part of this paper focuses on the comparison three different auctions with regard to market efficiency and pricing, given scenarios with two, four, and six competitors. Though the uniform price last accepted offer auction was superior overall, the number of competitors proved to be a more significant factor in determining auction performance. Significant exploitation of market power was observed in the duopoly case. The second part of the paper focuses on a transmission network with six sellers in which network constraints give rise to market power opportunities. Experimental evidence based on tests with student and expert subjects show exploitation of this strategic advantage. Several other scenarios are described in which the transmission network creates market power.

Not a chance. They are expensive to buy the machinery to make them work, and to add insult to injury, wind and solar farms in Scotland, England, Spain, Germany and other countries were paid to shut down for periods of time because of the operating problems of the wind and solar generation systems. Shoots down the whole theory for free energy. I wish I could be paid to stay home and not work - wind and solar frams were, why not me??

A majority of the cost of wind turbines and solar power comes with the initial cost of manufacturing and construction. The actual operating costs of a wind turbine or a passive solar power system is theoretically $0. However, there will most likely be cyclical maintenance costs for any renewable energy system, plus the cost of labor, and maybe the cost of leasing or purchasing the land where the systems are located. The reason that renewable energy systems can eventually provide free energy is because the initial costs and maintenance costs will eventually be less than the cost of creating the same amount of electricity in the same amount of time using an alternate source of energy (fossil fuels). So, the investment of renewable energy will theoretically save money in the long run, but it is not free to create or maintain. So, there would probably be a cost to citizens unless it was completely subsidized by the government, which would mean that the cost of the renewable energy systems are actually hidden within your taxes. So, the cost to citizens is hard to estimate because it relies on many factors, but mostly: cost of alternative sources of energy, and government policies. But, the cost of using renewable energy to the citizen should theoretically be lower in the long-run than using fossil fuel energy.

If you exlude hydro because a few states have a ton of it and it is fairly cheap you can see a direct correlation between the % of renewables and the price of energy in any energy companies rates.

not completely. There is still the cost of the chargers and solar cells as well as maintenance to keep them working. You would also have the cost of repairing and maintaining the transmission lines and transformers. You can contact you local power company and ask for a breakdown of the costs.

it sounds like it would make sense to an amateur, but to anyone who has done ANY work with turbines it is ludicrous... The sheer amount of heat produced in the bearings could cause them to explode, even assuming that one could find and purchase bearings that would be able to achieve the tip speed generated at 500mph.... most turbines operate at 7-35mph for a reason: physics. The turbine described above would require materials for the prop no less than carbon nano tubes, extremely expensive bearings, and a cooling system for the windings and stators that would require more energy than the turbine would produce, assuming that the heat didn't eventually melt the magnet wire and cause the magnets to explode.... I think that you should look into the maglev turbine...it is larger than a water-tower, resembles a hot air balloon, and generates over 1 Gwh at nominal wind speeds, and on top of that, it is a VAWT which is fascinating in itself as a rare alternative to the HAWT. nice attempt, but technical details tend to crush dreams more often than not.... UPDATE... maximum efficiency isn't the issue here, operating functionality is. The materials are simply not abundant enough to have any pure research backing it... turbine blades on HAWTs (and especially VAWTs) are extremely different from airplane propellers...the curvature and pitch in a well-built VAWT blade must be light weight, and create an extreme amount of drag, and do so even more at higher speeds as they undergo "ballooning" which is a torsion and expansion of the blades at the tip along with the pitch of the axis to create the maximum amount of DRAG. Airplane propellers are designed to be extremely aerodynamic, and provide as much LIFT as possible. If turbines did this then they would be ripped off of their mounts by the wind almost constantly. Also, if you have ever stood next to a huge wind turbine you'd notice the extemely loud "WHOOM, WHOOM, WHOOM" sound that the blades make. This is cause by the drag that they produce and actually create so much turbulence that birds can be knocked out of the sky, or another turbine too near downwind of it can be ripped apart. This occurs usually at less than 400RPM...airplane propellers moving at this rate are nearly silent due to their lack of drag, and have an operating speed of well over 10,000 RPM. What would need to be done to make this even approach feasibility is to drop the entire idea of prop blades, and move to a design more closely relating a jet engine, butt he issues of heat and friction would still be in place, along with reduced efficiency due to the drag vs lift issue again...you need to look in uncommon places for uncommon solutions...

The idea is sound, but it's hard (and expensive) to make such devices strong enough to survive the hurricane. It's also seldom economical to make something that's useful just a few times a year. Traditional wind turbines are placed where winds are high, but steady, and near existing transmission lines. Don't give up thinking about things like this. Harnessing tides and wave, once impractical, are now becoming practical.

If it was possible some engineer would have invented something by now. I always think anything was possible but the winds are too strong to harness the power of a hurricane or tornado. I did see a cork screw type of wind mill and that is the only one that may hold up in a strong wind. Don't give up hope because everything is possible. The latest is the "Worlds Cleanest Car" that runs on compressed air. Think of the possibilities.
