What is the salary of a lawyer just out of a third tier law school? Topic: harvard journal

Question: Average salary please Can you also provide a job description? I would think that a student out of a top tier law school (harvard, yale, etc) would be hired as an associate and would be paid $130,000. I might be attending third tier school. Does that mean will I will have to do the horse work?

If you are a graduate of a third tier law school, your prospects of being hired by a Big Law firm (the top 100 firms based on profit and income information by the American Lawyer journal, sometimes also known as “prestige firms”), which currently are paying first year associate salaries in the range of $145,000-$160,000, are basically non-existent. Prospects that you will be hired by one of the larger law firms many of which might still pay a salary in the range of $70,000 to $100,000+ are also extremely low if not non-existent. As a graduate from a third tier law school it is far more likely than not that you will either not be able to secure full time employment as an attorney within 1 year of graduation, or that you will end up working as an associate in a small law office with a salary in the range of $25,000-$40,000. A lot of law school students however cannot afford to work for such low pay because of they have to service a student loan debt that is often over $100,000. Most of these unfortunate souls opt to work as contract attorneys, if they can, doing projects for a large law firm through a temp agency. The current market rate is $25-$40 an hour working long hours in sporadic intervals for as long as each project might last. No one collects employment statistics on these attorneys but based on anecdotal evidence I have heard from attorneys in this field, it doesn’t seem that most are able to make more than around $60,000-$70,000 a year with no employee benefits, with about a third or more of whatever they make going to payoff their law school loans. The work itself is pretty demeaning. It really isn’t even the practice of law. It is coding documents produced in response to discovery motions for massive litigations. The contract attorneys are basically abused and demeaned by the law firm associates and often have to work in a dilapidated environment such as a windowless basement or rundown office space area isolated from the rest of the firm’s facilities. My advice is that unless you are on a full scholarship, or financially independent, and don’t want to get a law degree for employment opportunities as a lawyer, that you should not even bother enrolling in a third tier law school.

No it is the starting salary. You only took the written so don't expect to be hired for close to 2 yrs. 60k took the exam, then there is the Physical, Medical and background check. Unless you scored 98% or higher your chance of being hired are zero. Never is class size more then 300.

If you are lucky, $20.000 but when wanting to practice, anything is good. RE: What is the salary of a lawyer just out of a third tier law school? The rankings are especially important if you want to work at the more well-known firms or go for a higher-salary career. Schools in the top tier are more likely to have international alumni networks, etc. You can still get a good education at a lower tier school, but they're less likely to have the same resources and opportunities. You probably won't have a super-broad alumni network -- most people will be local. You probably won't be in the running for a super huge salary out of school, etc. Given the current difficulty finding legal jobs, you should probably look carefully over the school's number for employment rates after graduation, average salary at graduation, etc. You're going to have to do loans for schools anyway, so it might make more financial sense in the long run if you can get into a higher-ranked school. If you do something like a 3rd tier school especially in a big law market like New York, do mainly be ready to do "lower end" jobs, at least out of school, if necessary.

To get the best idea of the average salary of a lawyer just out of a third tier law school, check the employment statistics for the law school(s) you're considering; if it's not on the school's website, ask--all schools keep track of this data. Now a few more thoughts: Just because you graduate from a third tier law school doesn't necessarily mean you'll be doing "horse work." Please note that first year lawyers at firms often do similar work no matter where they work; pay and hours may vary greatly. That said, coming from a lower ranked law school certainly doesn't give you a great start to nabbing a six figure job right out of law school (which are increasingly fewer and farther between), but it doesn't mean you can't get there someday, though, by working hard and lateral moves. The fact is that large firms *do* tend to hire from top tier on down, but they may consider a strong candidate from a lower tier law school with a strong local reputation. Indeed, many factors go into the type of job you can get after graduating from law school, including the following: 1. Reputation of law school in area in which you want to practice 2. How well you did in law school 3. Your connections in the area in which you want to practice Overall, though, be aware that the legal job market is really tough and isn't expected to improve too much over the next couple years; be realistic about your job prospects and make sure that the money you're putting into your education (or the debt you're going into) will be worth it in the end. And please feel free to contact me with any questions through the About.com Law School site.

Joel Originally Answered: Can I become a police officer while going to school to be a lawyer?
Sure. It could be difficult though. Many police officers take college classes. Some officer work full-time and go to school part-time. Some work part-time and go to school full-time. You should focus on your education. Do the best that you can in high school. Take classes that interest you, that will improve your writing skills, that will improve your critical thinking skills, and that will prepare you for college. Get the best grades that you can. Consider trying to find out if there are any law enforcement agencies in your area that have explorer programs. Being a law enforcement explorer is great for youths that want to become police officers or other law enforcement officers. Getting a college degree is one of the best things that you can do. Many police departments require or prefer applicants to have college. Having a degree could help you get hire with some departments. Some departments pay their officers more if they have a degree. Having a degree could also help you get promoted. Get the highest grade point average that you can. Getting into law school can be difficult. Getting police officer jobs is becoming more and more competitive. Do whatever you can to make yourself the best candidate that you can. For example, don't do anything illegal, maintain a good reputation, keep a good driving record, don't get bad credit, improve all of your communication skills as much as possible, and become as physically fit as you can. Consider local, state, and federal jobs. Best of luck!
