Most of it $6.803 billion for 2011 Total Federal Inmates: 209,159 Most serious offense was drugs: 50.7% (2009) If the cost is divided evenly among offenders, 3.4 billion is used just to jail drug users. That is off a bit, because each additonal prisoner does not cost as much.

Well, I've only ever bought a few of those drugs. Here are the prices for the drugs bought in Berkeley, California, all in dollar amounts: Marijuana: 20-75 for an eighth oz depending on the potency and quality. For most people to get stoned once it costs 1-5, generally on the lower end for infrequent smokers. Mushrooms: 15-35 for an eighth oz, also depending on the potency. An eighth is generally considered a dose for one person to have a good trip, though eighths can vary somewhat in their psilocybin content. Most eighths cost 20. LSD: 5-15 for a hit or tab, 1-5 when getting it from a well connected person. A single blotter of LSD can contain anywhere from 50-400 micrograms, but is usually between 50 and 120 unless specified otherwise. For a real trip, most people need 100-250 micrograms of LSD.

The price of drugs never drops, in fact when it is a worse economy it costs the dealers more to purchase the drug so then they mark it up to a higher price. No matter how bad the economy is, there will always be a demand for illegal drugs. And drugs are so addictive that people will pay whatever they have too to get their fix and not get sick.

Jail is a couple hundred dollars a day per person and prison is about the same so it would depend on the drug , the amount , their previous charges etc as to how long they were incarcerated. 2 years = about $25 000.

It depends on the state/county. It's x-amount of money a day for each prisoner. In Federal Prisons it's $62.01 for each prisoner each day as of 2001. In Maricopa County, Arizona spends far less.
