Question: Also, how did the conflict lead to the Sunni Shi'i split? What further Shi'i splits occurred? Its part of my homework and I dont understand!

I don't know who that particular person is, but as for the conflict: many Muslims live in the West and are part of Western culture. How can there be a conflict?

The toppling of the shah was on good example of how Islam managed to first split the society (the lower classes versus the upper classes) and than unified it (into one Islamic nation). Another thing, if this essay is global, than why focus on Iran? You can find much better examples of both conflict and unity caused by Islam than that.
