Homework Help? Topic: Spell homework
June 27, 2019 / By Gerard
Question: In my English class, we have to write an essay by Friday identifying three different poetic elements in a song. These elements can be: figurative language (similie, metaphor), sound devices (alliteration, assonance), rhyme, personification, onomatapoeia, etc. Unfortunately, I have an unbelievable amount of homework this week and cannot just spend time listening to songs. Does anyone know a song chock-full of poetic devices? I would appreciate your help sooo much!

Candle in the Wind by ELTON JOHN - tribute to Princess Diana Goodbye England's Rose May you ever grow in our hearts. You were the grace that placed itself Where lives were torn apart. You called out to our country, And you whispered to those in pain. Now you belong to heaven, And the stars spell out your name. And it seems to me you lived your life Like a candle in the wind: Never fading with the sunset When the rain set in. And your footsteps will always fall here, Along England's greenest hills; Your candle's burned out long before Your legend ever will. Loveliness we've lost; These empty days without your smile. This torch we'll always carry For our nation's golden child. And even though we try, The truth brings us to tears; All our words cannot express The joy you brought us through the years. Goodbye England's Rose, From a country lost without your soul, Who'll miss the wings of your compassion More than you'll ever know. Metaphors saying Diana is England's Rose, golden child, implied metaphor that she is an angel or a bird (the wings of your compassion) Simile: lived your life like a candle in the wind I Am A Rock by PAUL SIMON A winter's day- in a deep and dark December I am alone- Gazing from my window to the streets below On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow. I am a rock, I am an island. I've built walls, A fortress deep and mity That none may penetrate I have no need of friendship friendship causes pain It's laughter and loving I disdain I am a rock, I am an island Don't talk of love but I've heard the word before It's sleeping in my memory I won't disturb the slumber of the feelings that have died If I never loved I never would have cried I am a rock, I am an island I have my books and my poetry to protect me I am shielded in my armour Hiding in my room, safe within my womb, I touch no one and no one touches me. I am a rock, I am an island And a rock feels no pain, and an island never cries. Metaphor: Singer saying he is a rock or an island (cut off from connections to other people, or a non-human entity), sort of implied metaphor or implied simile that he is like a knight "shielded in my armor" **For metaphors use , Simon and Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence" will be your best bet.

I'm thinking it goes this way . . . math = 2 1/5 hours science = 1/2 of 2 1/5 = 1 1/10 English & Social Studies = 7/8 of 2 1/5 = 7/8 * 11/5 = 77/40 total time studying = 2 1/5 + 1 1/10 + 77/40 = 3 + 8/40 + 4/40 + 77/40 = 3 + 89/40 = 3 + 2 + 9/40 = 5 9/40 hours 9/40 hours = 9/40 * 60 minutes = 13.5 minutes total time studying (if I interpreted the question correctly): 5 hours 13 minutes 30 seconds (or 5 9/40 hours) ;)

"English and Social Studies took ⅞ as long" ⅞ as long as what? ⅞ as long as his math homework, or ⅞ as long as math and science combined?

The Roman Republic started in 509 BC and the empire in 27 BC so therefore around 482 years passed. Hope I helped.
